Tradovate Risk Management Limits
Why Risk Management is limited to 4 accounts per Tradovate connection at the same time, and how to work around it.
Risk Management can run on up to 4 accounts per Tradovate connection at the same time. This page explains the limit, why it exists, and what to do when you reach it.
What the Limit Is
Each Tradovate connection can have Risk Management (Daily Loss Limit and/or Daily Profit Target) enabled on up to 4 accounts at the same time. An account uses one slot whether you enable one limit or both - it is counted per account, not per limit.
Why It Exists
Tradovate enforces request limits per connection. Capping how many accounts can run Risk Management at the same time - 4 per connection - keeps each connection comfortably inside that budget, so your protection stays responsive rather than competing for the same allowance.
It Applies Per Connection, Not Per Account or Plan
The limit is scoped to the connection - not to your user account and not to your pricing plan. If you connect a second Tradovate account (for example a different prop firm), that connection gets its own independent pool of 4. Two connections means up to 8 Risk-enabled accounts in total.
It Applies to Demo and Live Alike
Demo and live Tradovate accounts are treated identically. Rithmic connections are not affected by this limit.
A Connection Can Sometimes Sit Above the Limit
If a connection already had Risk Management enabled on more than 4 accounts before this cap applied, those accounts keep enforcing normally - existing protection is never turned off to bring a connection back under the limit. You will not be able to enable Risk on another account on that connection until it drops back under 4, which may mean disabling more than one account.
Step 1: Free Up a Slot
Open Risk Management, choose one of the accounts on this connection that currently has Risk enabled, and turn its limits off. The slot is released immediately and the blocked account becomes editable without reloading the page. If the connection is above the limit, you may need to disable more than one account before a new one can be enabled.
Step 2: Or Add Another Tradovate Connection
Go to Connectors and connect an additional Tradovate account. The new connection starts with a fresh pool of 4 Risk slots, independent of your existing one.

Read the Tradovate Connection guide →Disabling Risk on one account frees a slot but never turns Risk on anywhere else. Which accounts are protected is always your decision.
Limits stay on across trading days until you switch them off, so an account keeps its Risk slot until you turn its limits off. Each trading day (from the 16:00 CT close) is measured on its own P&L.
