Every copy trading setup starts with one decision that gets surprisingly little attention: which account leads. Pick well and the rest of the setup mostly takes care of itself. Pick badly and you're fighting the setup from day one.
The leader sets the pace for everyone
Whatever the leader does, every follower does a version of - at whatever ratio the copier is set to. That means the leader's trading style, entry frequency, and instrument choice become every follower's trading style too, whether or not that follower's account is actually suited to it. Choose a leader whose trading is something you'd be comfortable seeing copied everywhere at once, because that's exactly what happens.
Favor the account with the most room, not the least
A tempting instinct is to lead from whichever account you watch closest - often the tightest, most rule-heavy one, like a fresh evaluation. That's usually backwards. The account with the least room for error - the smallest daily loss limit, the strictest consistency rule - is the one that benefits most from being a follower, sized down and protected by its own limit, not the one setting the pace for every other account.
Match the leader to the platform you actually trade on
Pick the leader account on whichever connection you place trades most naturally through - the one where you're fastest and most comfortable making decisions in real time. The copier handles translating that activity to followers on a different broker connection; there's no requirement that leader and followers share one, so this choice should be about where you trade best, not about matching connections.
One leader per setup, chosen deliberately
A copier is built around a single leader account per setup, not multiple accounts all trying to lead at once, which would just create conflicting signals for every follower to receive simultaneously. Decide up front which account is the leader for a given group of followers, and revisit that choice only when your actual trading setup changes, not mid-session.
Before connecting any funded account as a follower, set up the intended leader/follower pairing with Copy switched off, then flip it on and watch the first few trades land in the Event Log. That confirms the pairing actually produces the behavior you expected before a real account is on the other end.
